Traditional surrogacy is the most common form of surrogacy largely because it is the easiest and least expensive type of surrogacy. In these situations, the surrogate is the biological mother of the child that she is carrying. The man who contributes the sperm is the man in the couple that wants the child. This type of surrogacy is often used when a woman cannot produce viable eggs for whatever reason. For example, she might be infertile or she might have had her ovaries removed as part of a hysterectomy. Gay men will also use surrogacy if they want a child who is related of them.
The Process
While some people might think that traditional surrogacy is a bit on the racy side, the surrogate is impregnated via artificial insemination. This means that when she ovulates, a doctor will insert a catheter carrying sperm into her. It is fairly easy to determine when a woman is ovulating, and she can do this at home with a calendar and a thermometer that measures her basal body temperature. Most of the time, these surrogates will not take any fertility drugs. Some people choose to take drugs that help regulate the ovulation times, but this is usually not necessary. Women can also do artificial insemination at home if they want to do so. While one attempt should be sufficient, the process might have to be repeated a couple of times before a pregnancy occurs. After nine months, the baby will be born and given over to the couple.
The Legal Ramifications
After the baby is born, the surrogate has to give up parental rights to the child. The woman in the couple will then adopt the child. This is usually something called step-parent adoption because the father of the child is her husband. His name will go on the birth certificate and so will the birth mother’s. Surrogacy laws differ from state to state, and you will need to research the laws for your own state. Hiring or consulting a lawyer is recommended. Many fertility clinics can point you to lawyers and potential surrogates.
Finding a Surrogate
If you do not a close relative or very good friend who can serve as a surrogate for you, you will need to find one. Fertility clinics and surrogacy agencies can help you find a surrogate who suits your needs. Hiring a surrogate is an expensive process. The couple will have to fund all of the expenses associated with the pregnancy, such as doctor’s visits. The couple will also need to pay the surrogate for her services.
The Disadvantages
While this type of surrogacy is less expensive than gestational surrogacy, it is still very expensive. Couples will have to pay the surrogate mother, pay for the surrogate’s medical expenses, and pay for the artificial insemination process. Also, some people simply are not comfortable with bringing home a child that is only related to the father. Traditional surrogacy is something that a couple needs to discuss thoroughly before attempting.
